何か善意のことをするときに、「世のため、人のため」という意識を持つこともあると思います。それは、立派なことではあるのですが、危険なことでもあります。危険というのは、原理主義に走ってしまう恐れがあるからです。
善意を意識してしまいますと、それは正義と結びつき易くなります。自分が正義である、ということは、自分に反対する者は悪者、ということになりがちです。そうして、そういう考え方は、その主張の是非に関わらず、危険で有害なものであると思います。
その罠にはまらないためには、自分のする行い、主張はすべて、結局は自分のため、自分が得をするためなのだ、ということを意識し続けなければいけません。
このこと自体はよくいわれることで、特に慧眼であるとか、目新しいものではないでしょう。（少し前によくいわれた、生物というのは遺伝子の乗り物に過ぎないもので彼らを生き残させるための道具、もしくは奴隷でしかない。という話にも合います）しかし、私たちはつい、それを忘れがちです。
それを忘れなければ、極端な思想や行動に向かってしまうことは避けられるはずです。いわいる、中庸に留まることができるのです。
中庸でいることの大切さ。仮にも自らの考えに自信のある者であれば、その思想を突きつめた極端な結論を主張するのが普通だと思います。
西洋の思想家が極端なこと、原理主義に向かうことが多いのに対して、中庸を説いた孔子さんというのは改めて偉いものだなぁと思うのです。
ところで、“すべては自分のため”というのは私やあなただけの話ではなく、すべての人に当てはまることです。いや、別に、だから世の中なんてつまらない、と思ったり、口じゃあ綺麗事をいっても自分がかわいいだけじゃないか、と、やさぐれたりして欲しいわけではなく、そう思う心持ちを忘れなければ、 物事を少し幅広く、客観的にみることができる、と申し上げたいわけです。
やり方としては、“自分がその人だったらどう考えてどう行動力するだろうか”と考えるのが一つの方法です。つまりは、それぞれの言動の“動機”を洞察する、ということです。
但し、私たちは松本清張の小説世界に住んでいるわけではないので、普段はそんなことは気にしなくていいのです。ただ、例えば政治がどうの社会がこうの、といった公のことについての他人の発言を見聞きするときに、扇動的で危険なもの、または一見、妥当かつまともそうだけれども実はただの人気目当ての発言、などから自分を守るためには役立つ考え方です。
